Description
Rational Expressions, or Algebraic Fractions, are perhaps the exact spot where students doing “okay” in Algebra start to fall apart. In future courses, like Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and College Algebra, it is dealing with rational equations that students find incredibly frustrating. This packet is designed to help you, the teacher, prepare your students with a thoughtful, patient, and well-planned exposure to rational expressions. The end goal is that students really understand the concepts behind the procedures, which will allow them to learn future topics and improve retention.
This bundle will take at least a week of school to cover. It starts off slow, connecting basic factoring, LCM, and GCF, to rational expressions. (Students are not expected to know how to factor quadratic expressions, or anything greater at this level.) Students then learn how and when to reduce, then how to multiply and divide, then add and subtract, and then are exposed to complex fractions (rational expressions where the numerator, denominator, or both, have a rational component).
When you download this bundle you’ll receive a zip folder with a Read Me document that organizes all of the documents within, making deploying the lessons easy. (You can see how this document looks from the picture posted below.) The folder also includes a high quality, well organized, animated and easy to learn from and use PowerPoint lesson, a teacher’s companion that breaks down the key concepts and provides focus for your instruction, reference notes to assign for student reading or reference, one homework assignments, and links to internet hosted information aligned with this lesson for student or parent reference. There are four homework assignments, along with answer keys, and a cumulative quiz, with an answer key. The online information includes videos, online notes, and three separate sets of practice problems from Khan Academy.
As is the case with all of the bundles and lessons from Math Connected, you can use the materials easily in a traditional lesson, a flipped classroom setting, or a virtual classroom. If you assign the notes to be read by the students, they’ll further develop their literacy and experience with technical writing. Either way, they’re a great reference for students.
All of the materials here are aligned in a way that you can support students of various abilities, while providing access to content for review or for absent students, and even parents that want to have access so they can “help,” their child perform well in class.
